A young female author from New York City takes a trip into the backwoods of Connecticut to clear her mind and aid in her writing.  Shortly after her arrival she is gang-raped by four local ne’er-do-wells and left for dead in her rented home.  She survives and, upon regaining her strength, exacts a lethal vengeance on her attackers.

I Spit on Your Grave received little attention in its country of origin when originally released as Day of the Woman in 1978 – a limited issue that failed to turn either heads or profit except in some parts of Europe (actress Camille Keaton was awarded for her performance in Spain).  It wasn’t until a wide 1980 re-release under the new I Spit… moniker that the film achieved its considerable notoriety, earning the ire of critics like Roger Ebert (who attended a troubling screening at a United Artist theatre) and being summarily banned in many countries for its graphic depictions of sexual violence.  It has since been derided as exploitative garbage and lauded as a misunderstood feminist masterpiece.  With such polarized opinions surrounding it, I suppose it’s no surprise that this reviewer finds the truth to lie somewhere between the two extremes.

Plot: Spores from space fall to Earth in a rainstorm, quickly grow into pods and begin replicating the citizens of San Francisco as dull automatons.

It’s ironic, at least mathematically, that it’s so easy to feel so lonely in the big city. I grew up in proverbial small town America, knowing most of the people in my neighborhood and living in close proximity to many of the teachers at my elementary school. I moved to Minneapolis in 2007, into a neighborhood with as high a population as my hometown, and though I have as many friends as ever and a wonderful fiance to boot I still find myself, from time to time, feeling isolated, alienated, and alone. Never have I been in such close proximity to so many total strangers, a new reality that’s been interesting to come to terms with over the last few years.

Piranha is due out on special edition DVD and Blu-ray from Shout! Factory on August 3rd (the 32nd anniversary of its original theatrical debut). The title can currently be pre-ordered through Amazon.com and other online retailers.

Plot: While investigating the disappearance of a pair of teenagers a private detective and an alcoholic recluse inadvertently release a swarm of genetically engineered Vietnam-era weapons-grade piranha into a river just upstream from a recently constructed tourist trap.

A king among low budget cult films, Piranha is easily one of the most successful and best remembered of the movies produced by and released through Roger Corman’s New World Pictures. Directed by Joe Dante (Gremlins) from a sharp script by John Sayles (Alligator, Passion Fish) and cast with an impressive slate of name stars and cult icons including Bradford Dillman (Bug, The Swarm), Kevin McCarthy (Invasion of the Body Snatchers), Keenan Wynn (Once Upon a Time in the West) and Barbara Steele (Black Sunday, Shivers), the film blends gory horror with a wickedly sardonic sense of humor to make inimitable B-movie gold.

A small town in Maryland is hit by a series of gruesome and inexplicable murders. Sheriff Cinder (Tom Griffith) is clueless what to do about the problem, and even if he had an idea, it would probably be difficult for him to set a plan into action, given that he seems to be fused to his desk and also possibly one of the walking, moustachioed dead. In a sense, I’m quite glad he loves his desk so much, because another sex scene featuring him rubbing his moustache about some poor woman like that nightmarish episode in the later Nightbeast would probably shatter my sanity for good.

Anyway, the Sheriff knows well that he has no clue and no talent for police work and would very much like to call the state police on the mass slaughter. The town’s mayor (Richard Dyszel) however, won’t hear of it. You see, there’s a large “entertainment complex” (I imagine a very pink bordello) going to be built on the edge of town, and the mayor doesn’t want the investors to get nervous. I’m sure they prefer a series of unsolved murders to a solved one.
