Into the wild blue yonder…

October 23rd, 2010 | article by | No Comments »

…or not.  By the time you all read this I should (by the grace of Amtrak) be well on my way out of town, back to my beloved North Carolina to celebrate my birthday with family I see only rarely anymore.  Train travel is always interesting, and I may post of my experiences if time and weirdness allows.

I already have some content prepared to post in my absence – my devoted readers can look forward to (slightly) advance coverage of Shout! Factory’s Cannibal Girls DVD, due for release on October 26th, as well as a Halloween-appropriate review of Fulci’s City of the Living Dead and Arrow Video’s stellar all region blu-ray of the same.  Speaking of Arrow Video, news of their upcoming blu-ray special editions of Battle Royale, Deep Red and The Bay of Blood is coming in fast, and I’ll do my best to keep that updated while away.

What’s more, Denis Klotz’s weekly cult film column The Horror!? will continue as always, so you should have no dearth of bizarre cinema ramblings with which to occupy yourselves.

Though I will be returning late on Thursday, November 4th, don’t expect things to return entirely to normal until the following week, when I will have still more Shout! Factory discs to cover and perhaps some other surprises as well.  Until then I wish all of you well, and hope you all have a happy Halloween!

A short summer break . . .

August 10th, 2010 | article by | 1 Comment »

No news here, really, just an announcement to keep my readers up to date.  The weather has warmed up considerably in the past week and I’m spending as little time in my apartment as possible (wrap-around windows and no building-wide circulation make the dog days particularly distressing), so Wtf-Film will be on a brief hiatus.  I’ll be taking a cue from Summer Tor and keeping cool for the next few days.

As for what’s in the pipeline, I’ve just received Joy, Joy and Joan and Loose Screws: Screwballs II from Severin films and still have Larry Blamire’s Dark and Stormy Night to cover for Shout! Factory.  Thanks to Netflix I’ve also caught sight of Sony’s new Blu-ray of the Harryhausen classic Jason and the Argonauts and Olive Films’ Crack in the World.  As though that weren’t enough to keep me busy for a week or so, I’m also waiting on Arrow Video’s stacked special edition Blu-ray of the Fulci masterwork City of the Living Dead.  Whew!

Look for new reviews to start posting next week.  Until then, enjoy that summer sun and stay clear of those pesky nuclear testing sites…

Wtf-Film bites another technological bullet, joins Twitter . . .

April 9th, 2010 | article by | No Comments »

That’s right, folks – I am now on Twitter.  Why?  I’m not really sure, though it’s safe to say that idle curiosity can be a dangerous thing.  I’m interested to see what comes of it all the same.

Those interested (and let’s be honest, who wouldn’t be interested in the length-restricted ramblings of an unpaid online film critic?) can find me and my Cozzilla-riffic custom background @WtfFilm.

Happy WTF’ing Holidays

The end of the year is nigh and, a few glaring exceptions aside, it’s been a pretty good one here in Wtf-Film-land.  Denis is currently experiencing some timely computer troubles and me, well, I’m just taking the weekend off.  A big thanks to all of our readers, devoted and otherwise, for making this the most-visited year in Wtf-Film’s six + year history!  Be safe and have fun celebrating whatever befits you – we’ll see you back with new reviews next week.

In the meanwhile enjoy a virtual season’s greeting, courtesy of the unofficial Wtf-Film holiday mascot Tor ‘The Beast of Yucca Flats‘ Johnson.  Just look at how happy he is!

Where I’ve been . . .

My apologies for the lack of updates this week – rest assured that Denis’ latest will go live at midnight + 1 minute  on Friday morning per the usual – it’s good stuff, so don’t forget to check it out.

As for me, I’ve been in a sort of temperamental roller coaster the past week and on a general downswing – I’ll not bore you with the details, save to say that I’ve not written a damned thing over the past seven days.  I decided to take this week as a sort of vacation to clear my head and work on other priorities, like my feeder bug business (yes, I really am this strange).

All that aside, I’ve been watching movies as much as ever, just not forcing myself to write about all of them.  You can look forward to coverage of some good stuff over the next couple of weeks  – like Shaw Brothers’ OILY MANIAC and the insane (barely) post-code musical WONDER BAR, and Yancey Hendrieth’s ode to the stop-motion fantasies of old, LOST ON ADVENTURE ISLAND.

In the meanwhile, I leave you with this fine quote from my latest literary distraction, Dean Owen’s REPTILICUS:

Expertly she guided him, her body accommodating itself to the savage lance of his manhood while the world spun around them in a riot of sensation.

Wtf-Film guest review up at 366 Weird Movies

Have I mentioned that I love 366weirdmovies.com?  No?  Well I do.  The owner / operator / chief contributor is a great guy and a real asset to the rather disorganized community of bizarre cinema aficionados.  If you haven’t yet, I highly suggest visiting his site [and giving that nifty bookmarking browser feature a go while you're at it].

In the meanwhile, 366 Weird Movies has been kind enough to publish a guest review from yours truly.  Ever heard of JESUS AND HER GOSPEL OF YES?  Well you have now.  Enjoy the read, and enjoy the site!

It’s rare these days for me to come across a new film review site that’s worth the time it takes to load it up in a browser, and doubly rare that I find a fellow reviewer with an appreciation for the work of the one-of-a-kind Coleman Francis.  So without further delay, I present you with Kalle Räisänen’s Thebes Reviews/Commentary.

A permanent link can be found on the side menu.  Happy reading!

THE HURT LOCKER – a movie you need to see

So, I’ve spent the past hour and a half starting and restarting a  review of this film, but it’s just not happening.  I fully intend to provide an article for it, perhaps after I see the film again, but it’ll have to be at a later date.

For now it will suffice to say that THE HURT LOCKER is a movie that positively demands to be seen, and I will echo the critical consensus out there in saying that it is quite probably the best non-documentary production to deal with the Iraq war.  I went to see it with a friend who served in the conflict, who told me that it pretty well encapsulated the experience of being on the ground there.  High praise indeed.

As far as I’m concerned this is the best film seeing theatrical release at present and fully deserving of recommendation.  Those of you living in Minneapolis can see it at Landmark’s Uptown Theatre.  Hulu has been so  kind as to provide the intense opening scene for online viewing – I’ve embedded it below.

Christmas in July ’09 begins!

The first review of the month-long celebration of yule-tide yarns has been posted by DarkSider’s Realm – hopefully it’s just one of many to follow.  You can find DarkSider’s review of the 1974 animated edition of TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS here.

Wtf-Film’s only officially scheduled contribution is 1984′s NIGHT OF THE COMET, a review of which should be appearing early on next week.  Given that this is a month-long roundtable, don’t be surprised to see another Christmas themed review spring up before July is through.

The soaker page designed by me for the roundtable, though currently a bit barren, can be found here.  Happy reading!

Welcome to the new Wtf-Film.com

. . . same as the old Wtf-Film.com – only not!

Wtf-Film.com is now powered by WordPress, which has improved quite a bit since I last used it.  The change will cut down on my work load considerably, especially in regards to the updating of this site, allowing me all that much more time to spend writing content.

Overall, changes are minimal.  The layout is the same, though a few of the fiddly bits [the side menu, post format, etc.] are altered.  All of the articles from the old site have been updated with the exception of the most ancient of the DVD reviews, for which more comprehensive re-writes are in the works.

Note that the RSS feed has changed, since WordPress makes its own.  While this has already saved me considerable time, it means that all of you faithful subscribers will have to update your subscriptions, as the old feed will no longer be updated.  The RSS links found on this site now direct to the new feed [did that even need saying?].

That’s it for the moment – more tomorrow [or later today, as it were].
