The actor was Harold John Smith; the screenwriter was Harold Jacob Smith, who'd been writing (usually as Hal Smith) since at least 1943. He eventually was nominated for an Oscar for his work with Stanley Kramer on THE DEFIANT ONES and INHERIT THE WIND.
